Devlog (week of Nov. 2,4)
This week the assignment we were given was to create a fun and unique game, that is based off of Battle Battle. The theme we had to include in our game was "villains." The lesson for this week was balance again. As I reflect back on this week, it was crazy to say the least. Before Tuesday's class, one my teammates and I came up with the theme of our game. The other person on our team was out of town all week and couldn't be reached. We chose to do the Mob, being the villains, versus the citizens. We had our game design and cards created, but we did not have them present physically. When my group mate and I went to Tuesday's class, we play tested other groups game and gave them feedback. Since we did not have our game it meant we could not test out the balancing or the pacing of our game. Due to our lack of communication, we did not get advice or suggestions for Mob vs. Locals and that becomes a very huge problem. From that point on, both of my teammates were out of town/busy and so I could not play our game with anyone to test it. That is also a very big issue because I did not know what we could add to improve the game. The time I had between Tuesday and Thursday, I tried to add as much as I could to the project. On Thursday we had some time to play our game and I believe that the pacing was too fast. One of the criticism's we received was that Mob vs. Locals was a bit too similar to Battle Battle and it could use some more newer elements to make it unique. It makes sense because the attacking was exactly like Battle Battle. We only had a few new things that made our game different, such as the winner is determined by adding up all their tokens, hp, and cards won. We made our game cooperative but there is a first place winner at the conclusion of the game. One suggestion we got, was that the winner at the end is then the boss for the next round. I think it was a very creative idea and could definitely give us that extra something. The biggest take away from this week for me, is that it's extremely important to help your group and make time for your group. I realized that I should pick true people to be in my group, moving forward. Everyone in a group has to be on the same page and actually want to put in the same amount of work. Without communication and equality in the amount of work, the results will not be there at the end. The assignment was pretty fun and I really enjoyed that it allowed us to be as creative as we wanted.
