Devlog (September 28, 30)

For this unit, I've decided to choose Skate 3 as my video game. The assignment is to make another paper prototype and I feel like reverse engineering Skate 3, would be a good idea. Skate 3 is a video game that I used to play all the time, when it was in it's prime. Recently, I have been playing it because it's still very fun to play with others. The social aspect of the game is great because you can play with friends and do a bunch of activities and games, which is what my friends and I have been doing. The game lets you create your own skate park and you can invite friends to try it out and skate. There are also online game modes and racing, that you can do with friends.

I want to prototype a game that captures the socializing part about Skate 3. The paper prototype so far, is made with grid paper and construction paper. I believe the game should be some-what like a board game, where players have a game piece and they have to get to a certain finish line. Players move in the game by answering questions. Questions will be written out on index cards and they will be a part of the game. Chapter 6 explains that games have  different types of design values to them. Some games are made with social design values and they basically are all about helping society in any way possible (Macklin & Sharp, ch.6). My game will definitely be in that social design category because it's a social game, where you get to know the people you're playing with and learn about them. I'm not focusing on the individual aspects of Skate, but rather just the social part of the game. It's all about interacting and not playing alone. I believe the design value will be generated by the game's experience mostly, but also with the challenge.
